Brainrot games, explained

If you have seen games full of toilets with heads, blue monsters with big smiles, or little crewmates with visors, you have seen brainrot games. The label is slang, and it can be confusing if you are not already in the loop.

This page explains where the main characters come from, so the jokes in these games make more sense.

What does brainrot mean?

Brainrot is internet slang for content that is repetitive, absurd and very online, the kind of thing that sticks in your head. The phrase became so common that Oxford University Press named brain rot its word of the year for 2024.

Brainrot games take memes and characters from videos, other games and social media and turn them into quick, silly browser games. They are not usually deep, but they are very easy to play and share.

Where the main characters come from

Impostors and crewmates come from Among Us, a social deduction game from InnerSloth released in 2018 that became a worldwide hit in 2020. Many browser games reuse the look: a bean-shaped character with a visor, and one player secretly working against the rest.

Huggy Wuggy is the tall, blue, smiling villain from Poppy Playtime, a horror game released in 2021. Browser games often turn him into a chase character, and sometimes a harmless one. Skibidi Toilet is a series of animated videos that began in 2023, which spawned a large number of shooters and platformers.

Noob is a joke about the default look of a new player on Roblox. In browser games, a noob character is usually the hapless hero or the target of the joke.

Why they are so common in browser games

Browser games are cheap and fast to make, and a recognizable character helps a new game get clicks. That is why one meme can produce dozens of games in a few weeks. It also means quality varies a lot, so a few minutes of trying is the best way to see if one is any good.
